When you hear the words Hashimoto's Disease and Hyperthyroidism what are they talking about? Well, Hashimoto was a Japanese surgeon. He was born in 1881 and died in 1934. The disease that was named after him is a chronic thyroiditis. It is also a common cause of a goiter, which is an enlargement of the thyroid gland, which secretes hormones that control the body temperature and the usage of energy. There are other names for this disease and they are: Hashimoto's struma, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, or Hashimoto's struma lymphomatosa.

One thing you might be concerned with is what do you need to do once you are diagnosed with Hashimoto's Disease or Hyperthyroidism? Any supplements that contain iodine will need to be stopped. Even though iodine is an important supplement, when it comes to Hashimoto's disease it will actually provoke the immune system and bring on an attack. You will need to be sure that your vitamin D intake is being properly absorbed into the body. This vitamin is crucial for the immune system. Get tested to make sure.

While you are getting tested for your levels of vitamin D ask your doctor to test you for gluten sensitivity. It seems that people with Hashimoto's Disease have this sensitivity which means when gluten is in your body your immune system will attack it and try to kill it, and this causes sizable inflammation, to the point where your system will destroy your thyroid gland. Get your saliva or blood tested, but also a stool test. To continue eating gluten is destructive to your existing condition.

It will be your responsibility to manage your blood sugar level. It is important to watch it closely. With proper regulation you will keep from triggering your immune system. One thing you must do if you have been diagnosed with Hashimoto's Disease or Hyperthyroidism is to not take anything that is an immune supporting supplement. It will only confuse your immune system. What will happen is the imbalance will attack your own thyroid gland. The bottom line is that you want to be able to feel good again.

If you or someone close to you has recently been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease or any of the thyroid dysfunctions listed above, please stop taking anything with iodine and any immune supporting supplements. Over time, you may end up doing more damage than good. Get tested by a physician and follow their directions.
